David Koch addresses TV rival Karl Stefanovics Logies joke
David “Kochie” Koch has spoken out about being the butt of Karl Stefanovic’s joke at last month’s TV Week Logie Awards.
The former Sunrise host was doing the rounds this morning visiting his old stomping ground at the Seven studios to promote his new role as Economic Director at Compare the Market when he was asked about Aussie TV’s night of nights.
After a brief pit stop at Sunrise to talk finance, Koch got more personal with The Morning Show host Kylie Gillies and fill-in Matt Doran when asked what he thought about Sam Pang’s opening monologue at the ceremony.
“He did such a great job and the gags were really good,” Koch recalled of the host. “Sam is really clever because he never makes them vicious or personal or whatever. It was just a wonderful night.”
“A bit different to Karl’s sense of humour,” he added.
It was at the event, while introducing the In Memoriam segment, that Stefanovic decided to ad-lib a joke at Koch’s expense onstage.
Previously that night, Koch had said he enjoys watching the TV series Bumps, and Stefanovic took the opportunity to turn the admission into a cocaine joke (small amounts of the drug are commonly called “bumps”).
“I did also want to just check something, I am pretty sure before I heard Kochie say he loves Bumps … season 3,” the Today personality wondered on stage.
“Did anyone mishear that? Because I am pretty sure I did. Anyway, those are the headlines tomorrow morning.”
The cringe-worthy joke fell flat and was mostly met with silence from the star-studded audience. The awkward moment was later brought up at the ceremony again when Pang pointed out how bad it was.
“I don’t want to say Karl Stefanovic’s joke about Kochie sank, I don’t want to say it sank, but Oceangate are offering expeditions to visit it, to those who are interested,” Pang said, referring to the ill-fated Titan submersible that imploded and killed all on-board in June.

A joke that did land about Kochie came from Pang himself, with Kochie welcoming the playful ribbing.
“There’s no doubting you changed breakfast television forever. Warmth, humour, personality … you needed none of those,” Pang told the veteran host. “What a marvel you are, sir. Well done!”
“The world of television moves on quickly,” he added. “Kochie’s only here tonight because he’s Larry Emdur’s plus-one!”
